As always, I had a great time and saw about 63 species of birds at
Coyote Hills RP this morning from about 6:30-11 am. Highlights
included a gorgeous adult dark rufous morph RED-TAILED HAWK (there
seems to be one here every winter), a very loud and persistent singing
CALIFORNIA THRASHER near the junction of the Willow and Chochenyo
trails, and a surprising (to me) GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET foraging at
eye level in the fennel patch at the junction of the Bayview and
Meadowlark trails. Two LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES were also seen.

A not-so-great photo of the GCKI can be seen here:

As a side note, I was re-reading Hans Peeters "Raptors of California"
today, and I noticed he mentions a regular wintering Rough-legged Hawk
at Coyote Hills - has this bird been seen over the past couple of
years (I don't remember any reports). Feel free to email me offline
if you have any info. on this...
