    Dear Birders:

Hearing the mysterious drawn out calls of a Varied Thrush is a winter event in my neighborhood, but hearing them in 'stereo' is not. Several of them were calling back and forth this morning from hidden perches, at least one close enough for me to hear the less common whirring note. Are other birders seeing or hearing a larger number than usual? A posting last week reported seeing 10 Varied Thrushes along the Pack Rat Trail at Jewel Lake and hearing even more.

Though this does not appear to be an "irruptive" year like two years ago when numbers in the same area were over 200 individuals, they are a joy in any number.
