I found a juvenile, probably female, red crossbill panting in distress (noon, 87 degrees)in the middle of our street in Lafayette.  I have never seen a crossbill before, and we have been in the area over 20 years. I dripped some water down its throat and tried to cool it with water on the body and blowing air over it before returning it to the thicket nearby.  Does anyone else have crossbills nesting nearby?
