Like Alan and his hummingbirds we do get quite attached to our "charges".
When I got home this morning it was way too quiet. The mockingbirds weren't in their usual "watch" position. they seemed to be doddering around, even ignoring the squirrel in the nearby liquid amber tree.
Poking around I found their baby chick on the ground, quite dead.
My daughter, who will be heart-broken, heard its first peeps earlier this week. She thought it was 2 chicks. I'll wait a week or two then get the ladder and check the nest to see if there's any indication as to what happened. My guess is the squirrels probably dislodged the poor thing late last night and it fell. It was intact when I found it, loosely covered in its downy feathers.
Anyway I buried it next to my rose bush. In time it will become part of the roses and the scent in the air.
I wish I wasn't working at home today, it's too quiet.
