    On 3/31, I had a new yard bird--a Downy Woodpecker. I don't think I've
heard anything in the neighborhood besides Nuttall's, which have
occasionally visited the trees in the yard.

A couple of days before, a Spotted Towhee gave its cat call several
times from the backyard, but it was hiding somewhere where I couldn't
see it. One visited last year in mid-April.

Also on 3/11, a male Selasphorus hummingbird was visiting a lavender
bush, while the sun was low in the sky and hitting its coppery feathers.
It flew off when it saw me, so I didn't get to study it.
