I took my first trip down to the Hayward shoreline (from Winton Ave) this beautiful New Years morning after reading about so many interesting sightings in that area.

We saw many of the usual shorebirds plus the Ross's geese (not the snow goose).

Almost back to the car we were alerted by a bird making a very unusual call as it flew into the flood control channel. A greyish bird with long legs, it made very exaggerated bobbing movements with its head -- I was totally mystified. As soon as I got into the car I played the Peterson disc of bird sounds. Of the shorebirds on the CD, the stilt sandpiper seemed to be the only possible candidate (but I have a very poor ear and memory for calls). I looked up the stilt sandpiper when I got home and it seemed a good fit in general size and shape for the bird I saw (sadly I did not get a picture).

Might this really have been what I saw? They don't belong here!

    Happy New Year
