49 degrees with a hard wind just before the rain at
Coyote Hills Regional Park this afternoon. A SNOW
GOOSE is feeding in a muddy field with a flock of
Canada geese just before the entrance kiosk on
Patterson Ranch Road. At the first parking lot on the
left, the BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER is foraging near the
first picnic ramada on the hillside. The bird is easy
to find because it vocalizes as it moves along - I
heard it before I saw it. A single WHITE-THROATED
SWIFT fought the wind as it flew by. I watched the
male NORTHERN HARRIER fold his wings and let himself
get pushed fast by the wind across the hillside until
he reached the wetlands, where he took the wheel
again. The dark-morph RED-TAILED HAWK was feeding on
something that appeared to have feathers in a snag
2/10 mile deeper into the park past that first parking
lot. Several WHITE-TAILED KITES were around, but only
one was making the effort to hover in the wind.
