    Folks:

Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society published "The Breeding Bird Atlas
of Santa Clara County, California" in December. The cost is $40 plus
8.25% state tax and $7.50 shipping and handling. But if you can stop
by McClellan Ranch in Cupertino, it is on sale there in the nature
shop and you save the cost of shipping and handling. You can see an
    order form at
you a flyer (1-2 MB) that includes a sample species account, just
    reply directly to me.

There are species accounts for 177 species plus a great deal of other
information on the county, its geology, vegetation, and changes in
the county's landscape over time. As author, I am too biased to
provide a trustworthy review--I hope we will have a few unbiased
reviews in the next few months. The book is softcover with 557 pages
(3.5 lbs, which explains the shipping and handling charges). The
atlas field work was from 1987 to 1993, and this is nice reference
for breeding birds in central California (oops, there is that biased
review). It is also a nice complement to the Alameda County breeding
bird information that will be published in the future.
