This afternoon, I refound the COMMON LOON - I'm sure
it's the same bird previously seen on Rainbow Lake -
at Quarry Lakes Regional Park in Fremont, this time on
Horseshoe Lake. The bird is hanging out with a gang
of western and Clark's grebes (it's the short-necked
one...) in the southeast arm of the lake, on the side
nearest the BART tracks. The bird continues to be
scope-shy. If it notices that it's being watched - and
it will notice - it will move off to mid-lake and
"disappear" for long periods of time, then show up
somewhere else entirely. A good viewing spot is the
bench on the hill just west of the junction of the
Western Pacific trail, which runs alongside BART, and
the Old Creek trail. (Park near the swimming lagoon
    for the shortest walk).
