On Saturday, January 12, 2008, around 10:30 AM we saw a Pileated Woodpecker
in tall pine tree above the West Ridge Trail near the French Trail in Redwood
    Regional Park, Oakland.

In the afternoon, we went back with a neighbor to see if we could see it
again but no luck. However, we saw a Red-tailed Hawk, three Golden-crowned
Kinglets, one Bewick's Wren and four Pygmy Nuthatches as we walked down the steep
fire trail leading from Wilton Drive to the Ridge Trail. The kinglets were
working their way through conifers overhead, the wren was moving through low
shrubbery close to ground level, and the nuthatches were searching through holes in
standing dead pine tree stumps. We have previously seen Golden-crowned
Kinglets from the West Ridge Trail.
