This morning about 8:30 a.m. we had a Cooper's Hawk swoop into our back yard
and grab a gold crowned sparrow. The hawk then perched on the roof of our
tool shed and spent 20 minutes or so dining on the sparrow, seemingly
unconcerned about the close, dramatic view we had from our windows. We live
in the Berkeley hills, about mid-way between Memorial Stadium and the Rose
    Garden.
At this time of year, our back yard bird population generally consists of a
large mixture of juncos, gold finches, house finches, titmice, nuthatches,
towhees, sparrows, and an occasional grosbeak. It's been quite and deserted
    for the last couple hours.
