    Yes, it's an odd idea - but they do add mammal to the menu. During the 
    big vole bloom a couple of years ago, whole fields in the Livermore area 
    were almost shoulder to shoulder Swainson's Hawks (which is what drew me 
    out there) and other sorts of hawks, along with Great Blue Herons, Great 
    Egrets, Ravens, and just about anything else in the area that likes a 
    lot of protein with lunch and doesn't expect to snag it out of the air.
    
    It was an odd sort of peaceable kingdom, to see all those raptors out 
    there ignoring each other's company, all snarfing down voles about as 
    fast as they could lower and raise their heads....
