I'm forwarding this e-mail from a beginning bird watching friend of mine in
Berkeley. This is a second batch of Cal. Towhee young this year from the
same nest next to her kitchen window.Judi Sierra

EXCITING NEWS: The one surviving towhee chick (I have no idea what
happened to the two others - no cats at all around here. Do squirrels
kill chicks?) is alive and well. Still totally adorable and fluffy, like
down, and still yellowish on the bottom and still a very short tail. It
can fly all the way to the top of the bottlebrush tree 8 inches from my
bdrm window and I LOVE WATCHING IT. It is sort of timid and when other
birds or a squirrel is around, it likes to hide at the base of the
redwood. The parent was doing the Towhee 2-step near the chick and I do
believe it was trying to demonstrate how to do it and encourage it to
try but it wouldn't. When it was sitting outside my window, a squirrel
appeared and of course in less than a second the parent was scaring it
    away very effectively.

Being so intimately close to this bird family, able to observe
without them seeing me, has been one of the most exciting and thrilling
    experiences of my life.
