The lone Ross' Goose at the Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area in Pleasanton that Dennis Rash� mentioned in his January 4th post was still present in the grassy picnic area on Saturday, foraging among many Canada Geese.
A park personnel I spoke to said it had been around for the last few weeks. I saw it around 4:30 PM on Saturday. Also Steve Huckabone told me last night that he saw it last weekend (the same bird?) in a grassy field near Livermore Airport. It may be moving back and forth between the two locations with other resident Canada Geese.
Note that a vehicle parking fee is collected at the entrance kiosk. (If you don't mind walking a bit you could park on Stanley Blvd, but not near the park entrance where road-side parking is illegal.)

Wilson's Warbler in Kensington

Yesterday I had a visit in my back yard in Kensington from an adult male Wilson's Warbler. This was the second time I've seen one here out of season, the previous being in December 2001. Ran out the back door with the digital camera, pushing buttons frantically, and got one documentation photo:

Hawk instead of warblers at Lake Merritt, Oakland

I went in search of the Black-and-white Warbler and the Black-throated Gray Warbler this morning at Lake Merritt in Oakland and didn't find them. I found a Cooper's Hawk perched near the described purple mushrooms in Children's Fairyland and then a pile of grayish whitish feathers near the path. I returned later after checking the garden area and the Cooper's Hawk had moved up higher in the tree revealing a carcass. I believe it's a Northern Mockingbird if anyone else cares to look I marked 2 spots with short thick tree limbs in a +. One is the front view and the other the rear view. To find the tree look for the mushrooms, then a large oak next to the path with a pile of feathers outside of Fairyland. Look straight from there towards Grand Ave and it is the 3rd large tree in a row (oak) . There is a smaller pile of feathers under it. Looking up into the tree facing Grand Ave is a silhouette of the wing hanging over the limb and bloody red stuff, from the other side you can see the wing is gray with white markings. Of interest I did see 2 Townsend's Warblers, a Red-breasted Sapsucker and a Fox Sparrow.

The Black-and-white Warbler was spotted today, at about 3:15 PM, outside Childrens' Fairyland at Lake Merritt, Oakland. It was on the west side of Fairyland, about halfway around from the entrance/mushrooms in Dave Quady's report. It was to the right of the gate marked "food service" in an oak directly across the paved path. It then flew into the bottlebrush bush next to that gate and then into the center of Fairyland.

Blue-winged Teal in Livermore

This afternoon at the water treatment plant in Livermore my spouse and I found 2 male Blue-winged Teal and 1 female. The Blue-winged Teal were in the ornamental pond next to the driveway with 9 Cinnamon Teal and 4 Mallards. Also seen at the pond was a Spotted Sandpiper and Common Yellowthroat. Further to the west on N Jack London Blvd inside the Livermore airport fence was a flock of 19 Greater White-fronted Geese.

Sunday at 12:15 PM I located the Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia) in a mixed flock in the trees along Grand Ave, but visible from the "Purple Mushrooms" in Children's Fairyland, looking toward the intersection with Bay Pl.
The flock was moving east, and we did not follow it as we were watching to see if we could also find the Black-throated Gray Warbler (Dendroica nigrescens) as the flock moved by us.
Although we did not find the Black-throated Gray Warbler, the flock contained a Townsend's Warbler (Dendroica townsendi), a few Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler (Dendroica coronata auduboni), an Oak Titmouse (Baeolophus inornatus), several Chestnut-backed Chickadees (Poecile rufescens), one Ruby-crowned Kinglet (Regulus calendula), two Orange-crowned Warblers (Vermivora celata), and many Bushtits (Psaltriparus minimus).

Lake Chabot, Castro Valley

I have walked Lake Chabot (Anthony Chabot Regional Park, San Leandro) a few times in the past 2 weeks and have not seen the Bald Eagles. I have however seen an Osprey almost every time. Other highlights have been a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a huge juvenile Great Blue Heron, and a pair of Brown Creepers. The foot bridge about 2 miles out along the East Shore trail is a great spot. I did see a woodpecker/sapsucker Saturday that left me wondering. It had some markings of a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker or possible Red-naped Sapsucker, but I couldn't get a good enough look at it to be sure. If anyone happens to see something out of the ordinary I would be interested.

A visit to Lake Merritt in Oakland yielded satisfying looks at the Black-and-white Warbler, my first lifer for 2004.
Peter Dramer and I located the Black-and-white Warbler near the psychological northwest corner of Children's Fairyland at noon today. It was in a rather bare tree (California bay, I believe) just outside the fence. We lost sight of it when it flew into a pine inside Fairyland. We also had great looks at a gorgeous Townsend's Warbler in a nearby live oak. Yellow-rumped Warbler, Chestnut-backed Chickadees and Bushtits were here as well, but we did not see other species reported by previous observers.
The location is west of the entrance to Fairyland with Lake Merritt visible to the west. An added treat was the large number of Barrow's Goldeneye in this part of the lake. Common Goldeneye were also present providing a great opportunity for comparison.

Male Tufted Duck in Channel Park, Oakland

On the way home from a day of birding in the south bay, my son and I stopped by the liittle park in Oakland near Laney College, the one adjacent to the channel that connects to Lake Merritt. In the channel among the scaup was a very handsome male Tufted duck, which was a life bird for my son. Very exciting!
