I observed 4 Clapper Rails, all at the same time, off of the wooden pier near the north-end parking lot at Arrowhead Marsh [Martin Luther King Jr Regional Shoreline, Oakland] during the high tide on Tuesday this week. For a picture of one of them go to:

Black-and-white Warbler at Lake Merritt, Oakland

The Black-and-white Warbler turned up again this morning at Lake Merritt, in downtown Oakland.

Thanks, Bruce!

At 10 AM today the bib-less Black-and-white Warbler was still (or again) in the same area, this time in trees above the small Alice-in-Wonderland-themed merry-go-round near the purple mushrooms.

I didn't see a Black-throated Gray Warbler in the flock, but then I didn't stay long, either.

Good birding.

I found the Black-and-white Warbler at 8:30 this morning at the same location reported earlier, at the entrance gate of Children's Fairyland near the purple mushrooms. I guess third try is the charm, because it took three days to find it. Also present were the usual suspects, and an Orange-crowned Warbler.

Regarding the possible Black-throated Gray Warbler near Lake Merritt in Oakland, there has been a male one, off and on, at my feeder since 30 December 2003.

Robert,

Could you please let everyone know what you use at your feeder to attract warblers? Finches, chickadees, and squirrels are easy, but attracting warblers seems like a real specialty.

Greetings

I think I mostly use luck. I have a tube feeder with Patio Mix (shells removed) from the Wild Bird Center in Walnut Creek. The Townsend's Warbler has been at the tube a few times. He usually is on the ground under it. He also likes my platter-shaped hummingbird feeder. The Black-throated Gray Warbler has only been on the ground under the tube. I hope this helps

Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area, Pleasanton

From: Steve Huckabone

I spent 3 hours walking the trails at Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area in Pleasanton this morning. Cold and blustery but a nice birding day. I collected 51 species, thankfully no owls. Today I noticed several Anna's Hummingbirds displaying, Bewick's Wren singing and a great California Thrasher singing as well. Also Green-winged Teal as a new park bird for me. Great Blue Herons are beginning to gather already, 6 seen today. Last year Great Blue Heron chicks were hatched by the end of February. Good birding.

Martin Luther King Jr Regional Shoreline, Oakland

From: Courtenay Peddle

Hello folks,

In addition to the usual suspects, on Saturday afternoon on Freshwater Pond #1 (nearest the road) at Martin Luther King Jr Regional Shoreline in Oakland there was an adult Herring Gull, an unusual bird for the shoreline. The very large, female Peregrine Falcon was roosting on the lamp standards in the airport parking lot, adjacent to Mitigation Marsh.

Good birding!
