In response to the question about the bird perches in Lime Ridge:
County Agriculture received a grant for the placement of perches to
encourage predation on the large ground squirrel populations in our Open
Space areas. The cities of Concord and Walnut Creek worked with County
Ag to identify areas where birds are known to hunt and where an
abundance of food was found. The city of Walnut Creek Open Space
embraced the idea as a way to make better Watchable Wildlife sites for
the public and reduce the amount of bait and other pesticides that
neighboring property owners felt compelled to use. These perches are
also found in Shell Ridge Open Space as well as in both Concord and
Walnut Creek areas of Lime Ridge.
