This morning's 4th-Wednesday GGAS walk at Lake Merritt saw lots of
wonderful birds, but the top was a Red-necked Grebe - practically a
lifer for me; my first decent look. It was swimming with the flotilla of
scaup and assorted other birds between the islands and the El
Embarcadero fountain - but closer to the islands, and often closer to
the Bellevue shore than to Lakeshore.

Our first 6-grebe day - Pied-billed, Horned, Eared, Western, and Clark's
in abundance, plus this one first-timer at the lake.

The Green Heron was there, too, and the Common Goldeneyes were courting,
and over in the park, a tree with three species of woodpeckers....
