Today on a herpetology class field trip, we were treated to an extended
look at a Pileated Woodpecker. We must have looked at it for 15 minutes,
and it was still in the branch when we moved on. After we had taken the
lower (right) fork of the Stream Trail split near Trail's End, we heard
it vocalize, and were able to find it on the creek side of the trail
    about 20-30' away.

(The spring herp course at Merritt College is Bio 60C., and will meet
    Saturdays: 2/6, 2/27; 3/13; 3/27; 4/17; 5/1 and 5/8.)

Another sighting of interest was a a short way before that: a Hoary Bat
on its back in the middle of the trail. We moved it with a stick under
its thumb claws and placed it right-side up under a redwood out of sight
    of kids.
