While hiking Briones last night, I encountered some manner of
goatsucker on the trail. At first all I saw was the eye shine in my
light, so I thought it was some kind of reflective trash left on the
trail, but as I got closer it was clearly a nightjar or a poorwill or
something. In the time between lifting my camera and lining up the
viewfinder, it departed, soundlessly, so I never got a solid look.
Looking in Sibley, it seems like the Common Poorwill is the likely
candidate based on range, though it looks like the Common Nighthawk is
also rarely sighted in the area. Unfortunately I didn't get to see
any of the white bands or patches that distinguish the two. Has
anyone else spotted poorwills or nighthawks in Briones or the
surrounding area?
