At 2nd and Washington in downtown Oakland, in the street trees, there
    is a night heron rookery.

The streets are whitewashed, the smell is noticeable and the squaking
from the trees is loud, but people walking by didn't seem to notice
until they saw my camera and binos and asked what I was looking at.

There are two babies on the ground--one was sitting on the top of a
bush alongside the sidewalk with people walking by only a foot away.
That one seems ok and could fly. The other is a tiny one that can't
fly and was crouching under some bushes.

There are about two dozen nests in the trees with babies flying from
branch to branch. Adult herons were sitting on the roof of the Fat
Lady bar across the street and on the roof of the parking garage and
flying in and out of the trees, and still people didn't notice.

However, the parking meters are coated with whitewash and there are a
lot of open parking spots under the trees!

This is one block off Broadway near Jack London Square.
