Hi E. B. Birders,
I had a very pleasant walk in Mitchell and White Canyon at Mount Diablo SP Sunday morning.? Nothing rare to report, but here are some of the highlights:
Western Tanager - two separate pairs?near the Red Rock Road turn off (the males were different individuals?based on the amount of red on the head.) Both males where singing from prominent perches, one in the exact location I had pointed out the song to one of my classes in early May.
Golden Eagle -?a?crying,?young?eagle?perched in pines at the top of White Canyon. When it took flight, it was harassed by a Red-tailed Hawk.? (I got some snapshots of the eagle falling backward with talons extended, which I will post on my website tomorrow.)
Black-throated Gray Warbler - just one
Sage Sparrow - preening after just bathing in a small bit of water left in the steam along Red Road.
?
Black-headed Grosbeak - over 10 sightings.? See male feeding young and another male on a nest (found by Joan Avise from Orange County).
?
Lots of fledglings of various species around.?
Two male wild pigs, one black, one brown - on the Globe Lily Trail, just grazing in front of me until I made a lot of noise.?Startled, they looked back at me with an expression intense fear, and they took off at full speed down the trail.? Later I could hear them rooting and snorting in the stream area where the Globe Lily Trail meets Red Rock Road.? This was a first for me in the Mitchell Canyon area.
?
All the Best Birding,
