This evening about 7:00 I was pleasantly surprised to see a pale red-breasted nuthatch (uncommon here) in a pine next to Mission Creek at Gomes Park in Fremont. The location was along the trail across the creek from the house where cliff swallows are busily building many nests under the eaves to the intense interest of several cats watching from the windows.

One of the resident loggerhead shrikes in magnificent feather was flycatching from a snag at the north end of New Marsh at Lake Elizabeth. A single American white pelican was on the northeast bay of the lake.
