I took advantage of California Canoe and Kayak's last day of 15 bucks for 4 hours yesterday afternoon.? Not having been in the water for a number of years I thought I'd head up towards the bay but was foiled by a cargo ship turnaround operation that blocked the channel.? Instead I paddled across to the Alameda side and poked southward along the local marinas.? The entire trip was dotted with Caspian tern encounters, with a small group of 7 congregating near? the innermost part of Shoreline Park which is part of the Marina Village Yacht Harbor.? I also encountered several pairs of mallards while ducking around the footbridges to the piers and what appeared to be one juvenile brown pelican winging it across the channel.
After turning the corner to where the stacks of empty cargo containers are, I spotted a double-breasted cormorant with the orange breeding plumage perched on a post. The rest of the trip was encountering the occasional Caspian tern until the Fruitvale Bridge. Nary a peep of anything afterwords, to a few hundred yards after the High St. Bridge. On the way back up a pair of Canadian geese flew by the 2 Coast Guard Cutters currently there.
I did not swing by the east side of Coast Guard Island as I have done in the past.
Talking with JT at CCK they may extend this special into May.?? If you are a kayaker and you aren't on their mailing list it might be worth your while to do so.??
