    Hi East Bay Birders . . . .

On Tuesday, May 5, Dr. Jack Dumbacher, curator of ornithology and
mammalogy at the California Academy of Sciences will present the
fascinating story of a rare chemical defense mechanism utilized by a
common songbird in Papau New Guinea. Dr. Dumbacher has recently
returned from an expedition to PNG where he continues to unravel the
amazing evolution of toxicity in the Pitohui songbird. His studies
have revealed that the source of the potent neurotoxin utilized by
these songbirds is a beetle ingested by the Pitohui.
