Robert (and all),
Here's my butterfly list from today's ride up Mitchell Canyon. If you click
on the Latin name it should bring up the information page, including
pictures, etc. I plan on returning to Mitchell soon to look more thoroughly
for hairstreaks, sulfurs, and Swallowtails.
Common Sootywing (Pholisora catullus)
Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)
California Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis californica)
Buckeye (Junonia coenia)
Mylitta Crescent (Phyciodes mylitta)
California Common Ringlet (Coenonympha tullia california)
Acmon Blue (Plebejus acmon)
Spring Azure (Celastrina argiolus)
Western Orangetip (Anthocharis sara)
Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa)

I would love to know what butterflies you saw in Mitchell Canyon. I am also
a "butterfly person" (as well as "dragonfly person"). I was in Mitchell
Canyon (and White Canyon) on the 1st and while birds were so-so (39 species,
no migrants), the butterflies were competing with the wildflowers for my
attention. I had a good list of species, but missed IDs on several and know
there are more I never saw (who knows what flew by while photographing Owl
Clover). My list.
Western Tiger Swallowtail
Cabbage White
Pacific Orange-tip
Large Marble
Orange Sulphur
?Bramble? Hairstreak
Thicket Hairstreak
Acmon Blue
Mylitta Crescent
Northern Checkerspot
California Tortoiseshell
Painted Lady
Red Admiral
Propertius Duskywing
