There is a large, ornamental, berry-bearing tree at
the corner of East 14th and Estudillo in San Leandro.
For the past week (or more) it has been covered in
frequently flushing, feeding flocks of cedar waxwings;
there may well be other frugivorous species present
too, but it's hard to do thorough drive-by birding on
such a busy street corner.
Yesterday I also observed a "run of the mill" dark
eyed junco, with an extraordinary mouthful of green
caterpillars. After frantically feeding mostly out of
sight at tree-top level (so quick, I thought at first
that it was a warbler) I finally got a good look and
could ID it to species. The bunches of limp green
larvae reminded me of a puffin with a lower bill
draped with fish.
It's no picnic raising ravenous young.
