This morning at about 8:40, after dropping off my kid
at school, I hear the woodpecker down the street. I
grab my bigger binocs and the dog and we go down to
California and Laurel. On the second PG&E pole north
of the intersection I spot a woodpecker above the
transformer. It's back was white and kind of fluffy.
In comparing pictures with my Sibley's and Audobon and
a couple of online sources it looks like a Downy
Woodpecker. It's a first for me.
After one set of drumming I here a fainter, distant
drumming.(!) After about 5 minutes this downy swoops
down to check out a small birch a few houses down.
After watching it for a minute is flies back up to a
nearby tree wear and simultaneously I hear another
woodpecker at the same utility pole I was watching
before. I walk around for a better look and there are
the two of them poking around the top. A minute later
they fly off towards the east. I walked up Laurel for
a bit to see if I could see or hear them but no luck.
Very exciting
