Yesterday there were 10 Golden-crowned Sparrows at my feeder. During the
winters of 2000, 2001, and 2002 there were only a few, with periods of weeks
when I did not see any. Other than this period they have been very common
at my feeder since 1991. So they seem to experience poulation fluctuations
like many species do, making arrival and departure date fluctuations
difficult to determine.
I bicycle or walk frequently in the Oakland/Berkley Hills with my ears in
tune to Spring arrivals. The first Orange-crowned Warblers I noted were
right on schedule this year. I have not yet heard or seen any others
(Black-headed Grosbeak, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Olive-sided Flycatcher,
Western Wood-Pewee, etc).
