    On this morning's train ride, there were three birds that I don't  
    normally see from the train along the Contra Costa waterfront. First,  
    a drake COMMON MERGANSER was near the outflow channel just east of  
    the old Hercules explosives factory site. I've seen COMMON MERGANSER  
    at this location occasionally over the years, but they're not at all  
    regular. Then, a few miles beyond to the west, a COMMON LOON and  
    HORNED GREBE were in close proximity. All of these birds were quite  
    close to shore -- with this morning's fog, they had to be else I  
    wouldn't have been able to see them at all.
