Greetings EBB'ers,
On our Thursday walk (Acalanes Adult School "FLATLANDERS" Class), yesterday
morning, I found a White-throated Sparrow in Contra Loma Regional Park,
Antioch. It was along the west shore trail walking north from the Parking Area
(near the Lupine Rocks Picnic Site. It was about 1/5 the distance toward the
Swim Lagoon. The Tan Striped WCSp was in a small, leafless lawn tree with 5
White-crowned and 1 Golden-crowned Sparrows. They all flew off within 4 - 5
minutes to nearby brushy refuges.
Noteworthy (at least to us) of the 38 species found were: four Grebes
(Pied-billed, Eared, Western and Clark's); Am. White Pelicans (15 +/-) and
Double-crested Cormorants (10+/-); 1/2 lb. Rainbow Trout (caught by a boater - of the
500 lbs. of Trout planted this week; 1 Coyote walking near the entrance
bumps; 1 Green Heron; Common Goldeneye pair, Common Merganser (female - the male
was there the day before); 1 Common Yellowthroat called; included among the 5
sparrow spp. were also Savannah & Song.
Also, later in the PM at Clifton Court (Forebay) Rd., near the turn off from
Byron Hwy, 211 Long-billed Curlews were in the south side field and 28 were
on the north side. Among the 10 Ring-billed Gulls in the fishing gravel
parking area was an adult Western Gull and a first year Glaucous-winged Gull.
Happy Birding,
Phil E. Gordon,
Hayward, ALA Co.
