Thank you, Bob Richmond, for your postings! I spent an
hour this morning on the road inside the gate at West
Winton Avenue (Hayward shoreline access)watching at
least two, possibly three, selasphorous hummingbirds.
A very rufous male with a bright orange-red gorget and
a decidedly green back faithfully returned time and
again to a perch in a shrubby tree on the south side
of the road about halfway between the gate and the
parking lot. While maneuvering to try to find a way to
photograph him without the sun behind him, I came
across a rufous-and-white breasted female selasphorous
that was clearly agitated at my presence. She was
flying up and down among the branches of a tree,
scolding constantly. Suddenly, I saw why, as she
settled herself onto a remarkably deep and sturdy
nest! I am posting a link to the best of my poor set
of photos. Bob Richmond reported one rufous
hummingbird in this location. I would love to know if
the birds I saw were rufous hummingbirds, as that
would be a life bird for me. Hopefully, Bob Power saw
the same birds this morning and got better pics!
