A RUFOUS-MORPH RED-TAILED HAWK was perched in a tree
next to southbound I-680 just north of Bernal
(Pleasanton) in the rain around 1:30 today.
Dozens of WILD TURKEYS were along Geary Road, on both
sides of the road, less than 1/2 mile from the
Geary/Calaveras junction near Sunol Regional Park at
3:00.
At Sunol RP between 2:00 and 3:00, WHITE-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, HERMIT THRUSH, NUTTALL'S WOODPECKER, ACORN
WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER, BUSHTIT, CHESTNUT-BACKED
CHICKADEE, CALIFORNIA TOWHEE, and WHITE- AND
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS were active despite the very
cold, wet weather that discouraged me from venturing
too far from the parking lot. More than one
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, with red cap brightly showing,
was feeding on the grass instead of in the trees,
literally at my feet.
Oh, and did I mention... I saw the YELLOW RAIL at
Arrowhead Marsh this morning! Absolutely fantastic
and a life bird for me. The best of my humble photos
of this tiny rail are here - the photo of the birder
is just to show size. The bird is the tiny dark mark
to the right of the birder's index finger's 2nd
phalanx. I'm sure that one or more of the twenty
other birders who were on the dock with me will post
something better than this soon!
