This afternoon, in the chilly wind at Lake Elizabeth
in Fremont?s Central Park (Stevenson at Paseo Padre
Pkwy), I picked up 33 species. The rarest were 22
small cackling geese, 7 of which had the white neck
rings of the Aleutian species, in the
always-productive northeast bay. The 5th (blurry)
photo in my series shows a ruddy duck (15?) in the
background as a point of comparison. Link to photos:

Most surprising to see were ten western meadowlarks, a
bird I have rarely seen at the lake, foraging beside
New Marsh. I also enjoyed seeing about a dozen
white-throated swifts over the creek south of Bird
Island, several tree swallows over the lake in the
same area as the tiny geese, and seven canvasbacks on
the lake just north of the boathouse.
