I noticed that last Saturday, then forgot to post. It's really, really
early for the grebes to start turning.

Grin - mergansers at Lake Merritt are like rain in July or August. (It
almost always rains sometime in the summer, at which point everyone
says, "But it NEVER rains at this time of year!") From November through
about May, you're likely to see one or two - usually hanging out well in
the middle of the lake where they're hard to spot. We picked up this boy
    - or at any rate, A red-breasted merganser - on the January and February
4th-Wednesday GGAS trips, and I've every hope of seeing him next week, too.
