I heard the first twitterings of white throated swifts
high overhead, as I was in my sunny Oakland backyard
yesterday morning. Earlier, as I sat at my computer,
flitting shadows on my living room rug alerted me to
the presence of a flock of cedar waxwings in the
liquidamber tree in front of my house; they scraped
their beaks across the branches, and gave their
high-pitched tseeees. Later, as I walked the Mountain
Blvd. shopping district in Montclair, a red-shouldered
hawk circled the streets, calling and flashing its
translucent wing crescents; a crowd of crows cawed in
counterpoint.
Oaktown birdies, singin' the blues,
Debbie Viess
