I've never seen one there (or at all) before, but I can't figure out
what else it might be: All even medium brown, more toward cinnamon on
the head, dark eye, no white whatsoever at the base of the bill, which
is long but ducklike (not a Canvasback's ski jump) and dark slate gray,
with a black tip set of by a clear white band.
She's swimming around with the whore-birds between the nature center and
the first island right now (or was, 20 minutes ago), cadging for
bread. The flock there is mostly Lesser and Greater Scaup (all drakes
except for two or three hens), coots, and mutt ducks, along with one
Ring-Necked drake and several gulls that look like
California/Glaucous-Winged crosses.
