In years past, I would get a Phainopepla or two in our typical suburban
Livermore yard a couple of times each summer, nearly always at sunset in
July. I haven't seen any here for at least 5 years, so I was pleased to
have one again yesterday at sunset. I first saw what I thought was likely
a female Phainopepla flying by about a block away. A few minutes later, a
female came in from that direction and landed at the top of our neighbor's
redwood.
A few minutes later as I was enjoying a young Black-headed Grosbeak in our
cherry, I saw an approaching falcon. By size and flight it seemed to be
either a Peregrine or Prairie, but I was unable to get a good look as it
past behind the trees. My best guess, based on rather pale facial
markings, is Prairie.
I've been hearing grosbeak "squit" calls for the past week, and yesterday
I finally saw two at the sunflower feeder. I don't recall having them
here in the summer before, only as migrants. Perhaps the growth along the
Arroyo Mocho has developed into habitat.
Good birding to all,
Jaan Lepson
Livermore
