San Leandro to Hayward on the SF Bay Trail Bicycle Trip
Alameda County
Saturday, July 15
Leader: Kathy Jarrett
Trip Report
It was beautiful and birdy day. Biking from the San Leandro BART station, which most did, and the SF Bay Trail from San Leandro to the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center and back was 21.5 miles, and the shoreline trip alone was15 miles. The tide was out for much of the trip, only coming back in after lunch. We found many shorebirds back from their breeding grounds in the far north, and baby and adult Black-Necked Stilts as well as many American Avocets. There were lots of Semipalmated Plovers and Western Sandpipers and a few Least Sandpipers. Cliff Swallows mobbed the roof of the Interpretive Center as we shared lunch and conversation before braving the wind back to the trailhead.
