Subject: Cooper's Hawk & Golden Eagle as Yard Birds
EBBirders:
?
Thought you might be interested in a few sightings in my Canyon Lakes South,
San Ramon, backyard this past week. On Friday (4/7) we had a Cooper?s Hawk
come in and take a Mourning Dove and proceed to eat it in the back garden.?
He had consumed almost the whole bird when I saw him from inside the house
on the stairs of the landing. At that point, he picked up the final small
remains and flew off over the fence up the hillside behind our subdivision.?
This is only the second time we?ve seen the Cooper?s this year around the
neighborhood, though we?ve seen evidence of their kills in the garden.? This
bird seemed very small, so I?m assuming it was a male.
?
Yesterday (Saturday, 4/8) while washing windows outside, I kept hearing the
local Wild Turkeys gobbling.? I located them on the back hill about halfway
up in the short grass/weeds.? There were 2 females acting very uninterested
and 4 toms, two of them displaying with their tails fully fanned out.? This
continued for over 15 minutes, when suddenly, an immature Golden Eagle, flew
over the house and up the hillside.? He didn?t seem interested in the
turkeys, but they immediately shutup and made themselves invisible in some
nearby tall grasses.? I didn?t hear or see them again all afternoon.? This
is the first Golden Eagle of the year for our yard, always a great bird.
