Yesterday while volunteering at the East Bay SPCA on Baldwin near
Hegenberger in Oakland I observed the largest flock of cedar waxings I
have ever seen. There were 100+ devouring the toyon berries and some
other berries from I tree I can't identify. Each time I thought I had
seen them all, a new flock would rise up out of another tree. There
were so many on some branches that the branches were bending under their
weight. It was a beautiful sight.

This morning while basking in the brief sunshine on my Montclair deck I
heard the first black headed grosbeak. The earliest I have recorded
their arrival is April 8 so this seems a bit early. Glad they are
back. We usually have them all summer with their young. At least there
are some signs that spring has sprung.
