    Greetings EBBirders,

Yesterday, while doing my Tuesday Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden maintenance
(Bette Wentzel Memorial Garden at Shinn Historic Park and Arboretum - 1269
Peralta Blvd., Fremont 94536) a tan-crowned WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was found
feeding along the pathway by the huge Moreton (Queensland) Fig tree. It was
loosely associating with the Golden-crowned Sparrows. From its pale white
throat I guessed it to be a first hatch-year bird. Of the 29 species in and
around the 4.5 acre Park others of interest were: Red-tailed Hawk (chased close,
over the redwood grove by 7-8 Am. Crows); Glaucous-winged Gull; Anna's
Hummingbird (3; including a young female learning how to gather nectar from the
    inverted-globe-like flowers of the Strawberry  Trees); Northern Flicker (3;
including one "Red- x Yellow-shafted" intergrade); Steller's Jay (2; first ever of
84 spp. since 1999); Ruby-crowned Kinglet (2; one giving full song); Hermit
Thrush (1; giving an unusual, pure note, whistle); Cedar Waxwing (7; FOS,
first of season); Townsend's Warbler (male; female, that bathed as did several
other spp. in the dripping birdbath - thanks to Dr. Howard Cogswell); Spotted
Towhee (pair; first ever in Garden); American Goldfinch (also bathed).
Three sp. of Butterflies: Cabbage White, Monarch and West Coast Lady.

    Happy Birding and Lepidoptering,
    Phil Gordon
    Hayward, ALA Co.

P.S. Garden volunteers are welcome, most Tuesdays. PEG.
