Dear Birders:
Sunday I took advantage of the sunny and warm day to check out some of =
the shoreline areas where others had reported a good quantity and =
variety of water birds a few days before. First I visited the basin =
along the eastern border of Cesar Chavez park and except for three =
overflying brown pelicans, not a single bird on the water or along the =
rocky shore. Ditto Emery Point where a birder had reported a redhead. =
True, there were lots of other people and their dogs out enjoying =
possibly the last fine Sunday for a while, but though that might have =
disturbed shorebirds, the water birds are usually impervious to onshore =
activity.
So where had all the birds gone? Were they just passing through on =
their way to points south and had set down on our waters for a day or =
two? I'm guessing that we're yet to see the water birds that will make =
up our winter populations. Does that sound right?
