On Tuesday at the Albany waterfront, we found two Red-necked Phalaropes
twirling beyond the mudflats, an adult Glaucous-winged Gull, and an adult Common
Murre that was drifting weakly with the incoming tide until several gulls
attacked it. It woke up quickly, defended itself with that dagger of a beak, and
began swimming slowly back out into the open bay.
On Thursday in the Berkeley Marina area, we saw the continuing Pelagic
Cormorant, an adult Glaucous-wing again, and a very early W Meadowlark in the picnic
fields of Cesar Chavez Park. We rarely see adult Gl-w Gulls at this time of
year, and have never in nine years seen meadowlarks during the summer along
    the waterfront.
