Thanks to Marilyn Trabert for the report on Swainsons east of Livermore. I
was there yesterday and found 30 or more hawks in the field at Herdlyn and
Lindemann. There were also at least 40 great egrets and maybe a dozen great blue
herons. They were not close to the road and the road heading east is private,
so I asked a woman leaving the private road if I could get a closer look in
her field. She said it was fine with her but that I should ask Scott at the
main house. So I walked in about 2/3 mile and found no one home. As I was
walking back, many crows and Swainsons exited the trees on their property and
spiralled upwards. More hawks in the field joined in. At this point I realized I
was not going to get too close to them. When you get within 60 yards, they
take off. There are still plenty of hawks out there, and I also found some in
the field just south of Lindemann at Byron Highway.

In Berkeley at Browning and Bancroft Way, I found two birders with
binoculars watching a juvenile Cooper's hawk. The adult soon appeared and then other
juveniles could be heard in the trees. One of them got a bird from the adult
and took off to eat it in peace. I watched it for a while and took some
photos. If you want to see Coops, this is a good place for viewing on the various
wires, poles and trees in the neighborhood. You can get pretty close.
