Thanks to this board for posting the notice about Cooper's hawks at Curtis
and Bancroft Way in Berkeley. I went to the site this morning and found at
least 5 hawks, 4 of which were juveniles. They are actually on Bancroft Way on
the NW corner of Browning, which is one block east of Curtis. The second tree
from the end has a nest and a wide mess of bird droppings on the ground, so
you can't miss it. The birds are fledged and flying around the area and
perching on various wires, poles and trees. They are emitting high-pitched chirps.
Quite a sight.
At Huckleberry Preserve in Berkeley, I also encountered more Coops between
the 3 and 4 markers on the Huckleberry Path. Take the left fork at the
beginning of the trail and then the right fork at #3. After you emerge from the trees
and see the panaramic view to the northeast, the trail heads south. Watch
for a tree on your left with a nest about 20 feet up from the trail level. The
tree has at least 4 trunks and this one juts up left at about a 60-degree
angle. Two juveniles were playing around this tree today. Thank you for the
recent posting about this park.
Finally, the Lake Merritt Coops seem to all have fledged. I saw one adult
and 4 juvies today in the park at Perkins and Grand in Oakland. The adult was
high in a tall tree while the chicks flew from tree to tree about 30 feet off
the ground. The chicks are all chirping to one another. The adult did not
attack me as in previous visits, presumably because the chicks have left the
nest. I saw several nests so am not sure which one they used. They are all just
left (east?) of the big marble monument.
