To our surprise and great pleasure, we have discovered a rather "messy" =
Stellar's jay nest with a bird sitting in it, in our backyard. We live =
in northwest Walnut Creek in the vicinity of Buena Vista School. The =
Stellar's are vigorously defending their territory from the scrub jays =
which frequent our yard. We attracted Stellar's jays several years ago =
when we first placed a birdbath in our backyard. The jays have been =
regular visitors annually since then, bringing along a young bird with =
them from time to time. =20

We have a peanut feeder hanging from a shepherd's hook pole which is =
frequented by squirrels, scrub and Stellar's jays. Usually the scrub =
jays are the intimidators, but not now that the Stellar's have a =
territory and nest to defend. We're really entertained while watching =
the assorted animals and birds who attempt to use this peanut feeder. =
It's especially entertaining when the squirrels try to shimmy up the =
pole when it is wet from the rain. Then, if they pause, they just slide =
right down. As you can see, we're easily entertained.

Yesterday we had three oak titmice(titmouses?) at our feeders who =
obviously are fledglings and today three chickadees. We have tried to =
entice them to use our birdbox, but they check it out briefly and I =
guess don't like the furnishings, the exposure, or whatever.

Otherwise at this time of the year, we have doves, house finches, house =
sparrows, jays, CA towhees and Nuttall's woodpeckers. We're hoping for =
black-headed grosbeaks who usually stop by for a day or two, but no =
    sighting yet this year.

I live in Oakland between the 880 and 580 hwys near the colusseum and =
about two weeks ago a Black-Headed Grosbeak came to my yard feeder... =
Stayed for a couple of days and haven't seen it since... Also, to my =
surprise, there was a Stellars Jay bouncing around the tree behind my =
house for only a short time . This was around 6 weeks ago. These I =
usually see in much higher elevations. Both were back yard firsts for =
me. No Nuthatches for me this year... but plenty of Oak Titmouse, Black =
Phoebes,Chestnut Backed Chickadees, and the usual groups of Finches House =
and Gold and House Sparrows... =20
