While returning to campus after getting my caffine
fix, I spotted a Black-crowned Night Heron on the west
edge of the UC Berkeley campus in downtown Berkeley.
It was perched on a fence in the redwoods at the
corner of Center and Oxford, where Strawberry Creek
dives underground. I'm sure these guys are dependably
seen in many spots around the bay area, but I was
surprised to see one here.
I just got back into town yesterday after a couple of
weeks on the east coast and was happy to see at least
half a dozen Black-headed grosbeaks enjoying our
feeders in Richmond View. It seemed a bit incongruous
to see the grosbeaks, which i think of as summer
birds, along side the pine siskins, which I think of
as winter visitors.
good birding,
Alan
