It was a splendid spring day at Huck yesterday. Greeting me at the
entrance was a handsome Allen's hummingbird, flashing his metallic
    tangerine gorget;
what a heavenly color THAT is. The trail was abuzz with birds. The songs
of wrentits and song sparrows filled the air. A Stellar's jay did a
fair imitation of a red-tail, then segued into its more typical raucous
cries. Ha ha to you, too, brother. Peering into the canyon at the first
overlook, I spied a small accipiter. Probably a sharp shinned hawk, I
thought. This was confirmed as he flew closer; the trailing edge of his
tail could've been drawn with a straight edge ruler. Farther along the
edge of the canyon, I spied the large shapes of a pair of companionably
resting redtails, no doubt taking a break from the travails of
childrearing. A pair of Bewick's wrens dashed through the trees, on
their way to their own domestic duties. Clumps of pale Doug iris and a
scattering of star flowers ornamented my way. Along the lower trail, the
noisy chuckling of the creek was counter-pointed by a faint gobbling of
turkeys. As I began my hike out of the canyon, a female Wilson's warbler
hopped furtively within the trailside shrubs. Her beady eye was fixed on
me, and it was obvious that she was on her way to a secret rendezvous. I
was an unwelcome guest. So, as any good guest would, I moved along,
wishing her and her brood well.

The great renewal of life here in the Bay is well underway.
