For those interested in barn swallows, we have a nest above our back
door at Watershed Headquarters on San Pablo Dam Road. Individuals were
seen in the area on March 18, and a pair have been associated with the
nest since March 26. Every year or so house finches either beat the
BARS here or nest after them. When the BARS decide to nest or renest,
every HOFI in the nest that can't fly ends up on the ground and the BARS
just carry on. The HOFI then nest in the outside alarm bells, which is
fine until there is an alarm. Fortunately there has never been one while
they there, or they would all have to learn to sign. =20

Not that nay of this is UNUSUAL, just a monitoring report, if you will:
1.First time we've seen barn swallows at lower LimeRidge OS - yesterday
3/29 - this year (we're close to the Canal)
2. Also the usual ring-neck pheasants (2) in "flight"
(conserv. est. at least (6) individuals being heard regularly in
different locations within a half mile between visitor center and Via
Montanas)
3.One of the kites (is "black-shouldered" current?) =20
4. (I'm pretty sure it was )a Peregrine - kinda grayish tho' - no not a
Merlin (hmm?) - it was a 6pm flyover, real fast - it was being mobbed
by the Redwings (BB) establishing their territories in the area...
note: I often see and hear peregrines flying high over Concord during
the day, esp. at Markham Nature Park (on clear days)! (you are welcomed
to verify that!)
6.Also 'back' was a flock of House finches - seem to be a 'seasonal'
appearance in this area (seed and cover availability I assume).=20
7. Still seeing White crowns /Zonotrichia sp. (i'm too lazy to get my
book!)
thanks!
