Hi all,
This morning I saw the Long-tailed Duck at Martinez Regional Shoreline,
Contra Costa County. Hugh Harvey had seen the bird before I arrived and it
continued to be easy to see until about 11:45. Well, most of the bird was easy to see.
In the 45 minutes I was watching it, the bird lifted it's head once for a
grand total of about 3 seconds. Therefore, I have a whole bunch of photos of a
sleeping duck. Still, it is a stunning bird that is very white and I highly
recommend it.
I think the easiest way to get there is to take Hwy. 680 north and take the
Marina Vista offramp which is the last offramp before the Benicia Bridge. Go
left (west) and, after passing several wonderful refineries, continue into town.
There will be a sign for the right turn that will take you past the Amtrak
station and into the park. Continue to the end and park. Head west towards the
hills, over an arched bridge, then over a flat bridge, until you get to the
rusted old boat. The bird was with several hundred scaup and perhaps 75-100 Surf
Scoters.
Good luck,
Steve Glover
